Matthew Chan a Los Angeles based artist, striving to unpack and portray his identity as a Chinese American male through the construction of a visual language, which reflects and questions identity by using photography, appropriation, and the collision of context and image by way of collage. It is an effort in exploring a various compounding of factors affecting one's self- perception of cultural, sexual, and male identity. Whether it be the influence of one's parental environment, the inheritance or loss of cultural history, a consistent soft racism/micro- aggressions towards Asian society, to the ideals of Western culture. Matthew questions what these potential components of influence are and where these many facets of human experience intersect to form the identity of a Chinese/Asian American man.
